Hello everyone! My name is Angela Sellitti and I am currently a student at CSUMonterey Bay. Two years ago I was given the opportunity to study abroad in Italy and itcompletely changed my life. Before studying abroad I felt unsure about which major to chooseand what direction my life would take. But after being given the chance to live in another cultureall of that changed. While in Firenze I began to understand the importance of language, culture, andcommunication. It was there that I discovered one of my current passions- language.
When I came back to the states I proceeded to enroll in my first Italian course and loved it. Thefollowing semester my dream expanded and I decided to continue with Italian and to take aSpanish 1 course. I knew that I wanted to learn multiple languages and I decided that I wouldsomeday like to be fluent in three languages; Spanish, Italian, and Japanese. That following Summer I took Spanish 2 right before I transferred to CSUMB as a World Languages and Culture major (with an emphasis in Spanish.)
Focusing on Spanish has been a way for me to reconnect with my heritage. My Grandfather and Grandmother on my Dad’s side were both born in Guatemala and my Dad’s first language was Spanish. My Grandfathers family was from Spain and I think it would be fascinating to learn more about the culture by living there for a short period of time.
Currently I work part time at a small low income middle school called Chualar. The school is very Hispanic gives me the opportunity to work with many migrant students. I alsowork one on one with a new student who has just moved here from Mexico and does not yetspeak English. Tutoring him in Algebra has really helped me to appreciate the value of learning anew language.I have many goals that I wish to accomplish in life. I love to travel and after I graduate Ihope to be able to teach an English emersion class abroad. Eventually I want to start my own nonprofit restaurant and go back to school for a Master’s degree. Until then I plan to travel as
much as possible and see where life takes me.
